The Upper Mustang trek lies in the Trans-Himalayan region, the northern part of Nepal. It features dry landscapes, red cliffs, and views of mountains such as Annapurna, Dhaulagiri, and Nilgiri. The area reflects strong Tibetan cultural influence, with traditional villages and Buddhist monasteries along the way. The trail passes through plateaus, canyons, and mountain ridges, with gentle and steeper sections. In this region,  the Thakali and Lo-pa communities live in traditional villages. Here, you can also witness monasteries and local customs. 

Details

The Upper Mustang trek is a trekking route located in the northern part of Nepal. This route passes through the Mustang district, also known as the "Kingdom of Lo." The upper Mustang is situated in the Trans-Himalayan region and offers landscape, red cliffs, and views of beautiful mountains such as Annapurna, Dhaulagiri, and Nilgiri. This area contains distinct Tibetan cultural influence, with traditional villages and Buddhist monasteries all scattered along the route.

A trek passes through various landscapes, including plateaus, canyons, and mountain ridges. The trail contains slopes and some steeper sections. The terrain is dry and rocky compared to other parts of the Annapurna region. 

Several Thakali and Lo-pa communities live in this region. Along the route, you can witness many traditional houses, monasteries, and local customs that are associated with Tibetan Buddhism. The trek combines natural features, cultural sites, and historical settlements that reflect the life and environment of northern Nepal.

Itinerary

Day 01: Arrival in Kathmandu and pre-trekking preparation

Your Upper Mustang journey begins once you reach Kathmandu. Upon arrival in Kathmandu, you are welcomed by our representatives at the Tribhuvan International Airport. After that, we move you to your 3-star hotel. In this hotel, you take a short rest. Then, you are invited to the briefing session for the trekking activities. At this session, you meet your trekking guide, who discusses the preparations for the trekking activities. After completing this session, you begin to handle the basic things needed for the activities. Following this, you shall be invited to a welcome dinner, after which, you shall spend the night at a 3-star hotel.

Day 02: A full day guided tour and sightseeing in Kathmandu valley

Day 2 is dedicated to sightseeing tours in the Kathmandu Valley. After breakfast, you begin your sightseeing tour with our experienced guide. The guide helps you to explore the world heritage sites. You visit different popular places such as 

  • Pashupatinath temple: This is the holiest Hindu temple situated on the bank of the Bagmati River in Kathmandu. This temple of Lord Shiva is of pagoda design. Pashupatinath temple is famous for ancient statues, temples, and scriptures, and also for the four major doors and the Gold Gajur at the top of the temple.
  • Boudhanath stupa: Boudhanath stupa is a sacred monument situated in the Kathmandu valley. It is known for its dome-shaped structure. This stupa contains the four pairs of eyes looking at four cardinal directions, symbolizing wisdom and compassion watching over the world. It is surrounded by the monasteries and prayer flags. 
  • Patan Durbar Square: Patan Durbar Square is a historic royal palace complex in Lalitpur.  It is known for its beautiful Newari architecture, ancient temples and wood and stone carving. The durbar square reflects Nepal's rich cultural and artistic heritage. 
    Syambhu temple: It is an ancient religious site that is found on a hilltop in Kathmandu. This temple is also recognized as a monkey temple. The Syambhu Temple offers a panoramic view of Kathmandu Valley. 
  • Bhaktapur Durbar Square: Bhaktapur Durbar Square is a historic palace complex containing many ancient temples, traditional Newari architecture, and intricate wood and stone carvings. This place contains attractive places such as the 55-Window Palace, Vatsala Temple, and Nyatapola Temple.

These temples and the durbar square let you experience the rich heritage and local culture. It takes around 5 to 6 hours to visit these sites. After visiting these sites, you return to your hotel and spend the night.

Day 03: Fly or Drive to Pokhara- Full Day Guided Tour

In the early morning, you get breakfast. After that, you continue your journey either by road or by air transportation. If you take a flight to reach Pokhara, it takes around 25 minutes. You can witness an aerial view of a diverse landscape, the Trishuli river, a view of Annapurna mountain and a glimpse of Manakamana temple. Whereas, if you take road transportation, you observe the valleys, the Trishuli river, the mountains, and Bandipur. It covers a distance of 215 km. After 4 to 5 hours, you reach Pokhara, where we have organized a tour inside this valley. Upon reaching Pokhara, you have a short rest. After that, you start to explore the local attractions such as: 

  • Bindhyabasini temple: Bindhyabasini temple is a Hindu temple located in Pokhara, Nepal. This temple is dedicated to Goddess Bindhyabasini (a form of Durga). It is one of the oldest temples in Pokhara. This temple is built with traditional pagoda-style architecture. 
    Davi's fall and Gupteshwor cave: Davi's fall is a waterfall that disappears into an underground tunnel. It is known as Patale Chhango. It disappears near the
  • Gupteshwor cave. It is a cave that contains the features of the Shiva lingam. This cave also has stalactites and stalagmites. Many pilgrims often visit here with dimly lit pathways to offer prayer and to explore natural beauty. 
  • Phewa Lake and Barahi Temple: Phewa Lake is a freshwater lake that offers a view of the Himalayas. This lake is popular for boating, fishing, and lakeside relaxation. Tal Barahi temple is a small two-story pagoda temple situated in the middle of Phewa Lake. It is a religious site dedicated to the Goddess Barahi. Visitors often reach this temple by boat.
  • Seti River Gorge: Seti River Gorge is a deep and narrow canyon in Pokhara. The Seti River flows through it. The gorge is known for its unique appearance, clear waters and hidden waterfalls. This makes it a popular spot for sightseeing and photography.
    World Peace Pagoda: It is a large Buddhist stupa in Pokhara, which offers a view of Phewa Lake, the city, and the Himalayas. The pagoda symbolizes peace and harmony. It is surrounded by beautiful gardens and peaceful walking trails.  

Once you visit all these attractive places, you return to your 3-star hotel, where you spend the night.

Day 04: Drive or Fly to Jomsom (2700m/8859ft), Trek to Kagbeni (2810m/9920 ft)

After an early breakfast, you continue your journey through the Kagbeni. Before reaching there, you first need to arrive at Jomsom either by flight or by road. You witness the desert landscape, the Kali Gandaki River gorge, waterfalls, traditional villages, and the views of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges if you take the road transportation. If you arrive at Jomsom through a flight which takes around 20 minutes, you observe the mountains, valleys and Kali Gandaki river. After arriving at Jomsom, you begin your first trekking journey. You trek through the Kali Gandaki river valley and Lupra, while observing the Mustang villages, Buddhist monasteries, cliffs, Tibetan culture and the mountains (Nilgiri, Dhaulagiri) to reach Kagbeni. Here, you eat dinner and spend the night.

Day 05: Trek from Kagbeni to Chele (3050m/10,007 ft/11.2km)

After spending a night in Kagbeni, you trek towards Chele on this day. Upon eating breakfast, you continue your trek, which takes around 5 to 6 hours, covering a distance of 11.2 km to reach Chele. Before arriving at the Day 5 destination, you watch the beautiful views of villages, chortens, the Kali Gandaki River, and cliffs. Additionally, by observing the sky caves and the distinct culture, you reach the Chele. Upon arriving here, you eat dinner and go to sleep.

Day 06: Trek from Chile to Syanboche (3475m/11401 Fts)

In the morning, you receive your breakfast. After that, you continue your trek towards Syanboche. The trails follow the Samar villages, Taklam and Dajori La pass, and Chungsi cave monastery to reach the day 6 destination. During the trek, you can watch the landscape, ancient caves, traditional villages, and view of Tilicho Peak and Damodar Danda. Following this, you can also observe the Tibetan Buddhist culture, grazing yaks and colorful chortens on the way to Synaboche. The whole journey of day 6 takes around 6 to 7 hours, covering a distance of 11.5 km. Once you reach here, you receive dinner and go to sleep.

Day 07: Trek from Syanboche to Ghami(3520m/11549fts/9.3km)

Following breakfast, you trek towards Ghami on this day. It takes around 5 to 6 hours, covering a distance of 9.3 km to arrive at day 7 destination. You see the sky caves, valleys, Tibetan Buddhist villages, traditions, and old monasteries in the trails. Along with these, you also observe the mani walls, red cliffs and Annapurna peaks on the way to Ghami. After you witness these landscapes and cultural sites, you reach the Ghami, where you eat dinner and stay overnight.

Day 08: Trek from Ghami to Tsarang (3870m/12697 ft/11.2km)

After you wake up and receive breakfast, you continue your trek towards Tsarang. On the way to the Day 8 destination, you watch the hills, red cliffs, mani walls, and chortens. At the same time, you also observe the Ghar Ghompa, prayer flags, Tibetan Buddhist culture and view of mountains such as Annapurna, Dhaulagiri, and Nilgiri along the route to Tsarang. It takes around 5 to 6 hours, covering a distance of 11.2 km, to arrive at the Day 8 destination. Once you reach here, you receive dinner and stay overnight.

Day 09: Trek from Tsarang to Lo Manthang(3730m/12238 ft)

On this day, you reach the key stop and the cultural heart of the Upper Mustang trek. Following breakfast, you continue your trek towards Lo Manthang. Before reaching here, you need to cross the Lo Ghekar monastery, ridges, and Lo La pass to arrive at the day 9 destination. You witness the Tsarang Gompa, Sungda chortens, traditional villages, and a beautiful view of Mt Annapurna and Mt Nilgiri. After a 3 to 4 hour (11.5 km) journey, you reach Lo Manthang. Upon reaching here, you can explore the places. At night, you enjoy dinner. After that, you spend the night at the tea house of Lo Manthang.

Day 10: Acclimatization Day in Lo- Manthang

This day is dedicated to acclimatization to adjust to the high altitude. You only explore the nearby places of Lo Manthang for around 3 to 4 hours on this day. Lo-Manthang is the capital of the Upper Mustang region of Nepal. This town is fully surrounded by a white wall that is 8.5 meters tall. You visit four major Tibetan Buddhist monasteries: Jampa. They are Jampa (Jampa Lhakhang), Thubchen Gompa, Chodey Gompa, and Choprang Gompa in this place. Additionally, you can also explore the royal palace, Namgyal monastery and Thingkar village. The Lo Manthang celebrates festivals such as the Tiji Festival, which attracts many visitors. At night, you return back to your tea house/lodge to eat dinner and to stay overnight.

Day 11:Trek from Lo Manthang to Dhakmar (3810m/12387 ft) via Gha Gompa

After exploring Lo Manthang, you continue your trek towards Dhakmar after breakfast. The trail passes from Gyakar village, Chogo La or Mui La pass to reach Dhakmar, which covers a distance of 15 km. During the trek, you can spot the Ghar Gumba (Gyakar Monastery), red cliffs, traditional villages, chortens, monasteries and Chhoser caves. After 6 to 7 hours of trekking, you reach Dhakmar, where you eat dinner and spend the night.

Day 12: Trek from Dhakmar to Ghilling (3,570m/11,713 ft)

In the early morning, you receive your breakfast. After that, you continue your trek towards Ghiling. On the way to your day 12 destination, you witness beautiful landscapes, Tibetan Buddhist culture, and old monasteries (Ghar Gompa). Along with it, you observe deep canyons, villages, caves and beautiful views of mountains such as Annapurna, Dhaulagiri, Nilgiri, and Tukuche. After that, you arrive at Ghiling. Upon reaching there, you explore the surrounding places and eat dinner. After that, you stay overnight.

Day 13: Trek from Ghiling to Chhusang(3050m/10,007 ft)

After breakfast in Ghiling, your trek continues towards Chhusang. You need to descend back through the villages of Samar and Chele by crossing the wooden bridge. As you travel, you watch the beautiful view of canyons, sky caves, traditional villages and prayer walls. Furthermore, during the trek, you see the Kali Gandaki river, monasteries, the culture of the Loba people and the views of mountains such as Nilgiri, Annapurn    a, and Dhaulagiri. After 5 to 6 hours of trekking, you reach Chhusang, where you eat dinner and stay overnight.

Day 13: Trek from Ghami to Samar (3700m/12139ft)

In the morning, you receive breakfast. After that, your trek continues towards Samar. In order to get to the Day 13 destination, you have to trek through valleys, cliffs, as well as high-desert areas. During the trek, you witness mani walls, chortens, prayer flags and small villages that reflect the Tibetan Buddhist culture and local traditions. Additionally, you also observe the views of the surrounding hills and mountain ranges. After you trek for 6 to 7 hours by covering a distance of 13.2 km, you arrive at Samar. Here, you eat dinner and spend the night.

Day 14: Trek from Samar/Chhusang to Jomsom (2,700m/8,859ft)

After breakfast, you continue your trek towards Jomsom. You follow the Kali Gandaki river valley to reach the day 14 destination. On the way to Jomsom, you witness red cliffs, canyons, traditional villages, the Kali Gandaki River, and monasteries. Additionally, you also watch Tibetan-influenced culture, and views of the Annapurna range, Nilgiri, and Dhaulagiri. After trekking for 6 to 7 hours, you arrive at Jomsom. Here, you receive your dinner and spend the night.

Day 14: Trek from Chhusung-Muktinath(3760m/12335ft/14.5km/9mile)
In the morning, you are provided with breakfast. After that, you continue your trek towards Muktinath. The route includes both ascending and descending sections. You need to pass through Tetang village, cross Gya La Pass and Jhong to reach Muktinath. On the way, you witness landscapes,  canyons, Tibetan Buddhist villages, and the culture of local people. Along with it, you also observe the beautiful view of mountains such as Dhaulagiri and Annapurna. Once you reach Muktinath, you explore the temple area, perform rituals and visit the surrounding village. You can also click photos and create memories in this place. At night, you eat dinner and stay overnight.

Day 15: Trek from Muktinath to Jomsom (2,740m/8989 ft)

After breakfast in the holy place of Nepal (Muktinath), you continue your trek towards Jomsom. While returning to Jomsom, you witness cliffs, ancient monasteries, the Kali Gandaki gorge, old villages, and apple orchards. Furthermore, you can also watch the lifestyle and traditions of the Thakali people, and views of mountains such as Dhaulagiri, Annapurna, Nilgiri, and Machhapuchhre (Fishtail). After a few hours of trekking, you reach Jomsom. Here, you eat dinner and spend the night.

Day 16: Fly to Pokhara from Jomsom or Drive to Pokhara

Following breakfast, you continue your journey towards Pokhara either by flight or travel by road. If you take a flight, it takes around 20 minutes while offering an aerial view of the Kali Gandaki gorge, rivers and views of the Dhaulagiri and Nilgiri mountains. By means of road transportation, you can observe the hills, waterfalls, Thakali villages, Tatopani, Kali Gandaki river and mountains. After a few hours, you reach Pokhara, where you can rest and explore the city. You can visit Begnas Lake, the International Mountain Museum, the Bat Cave, and the old bazaar. At night, you return to your hotel, where you stay overnight. 
Please note that even during rush hour, we can arrange a flight, bus, or private car to reach Kathmandu on the same day.

Day 17: Fly or drive back to Kathmandu

After visiting Pokhara city, you take a flight to reach Kathmandu. After breakfast, you prepare yourself to return to Pokhara via flight. It takes around 25 minutes while offering an aerial view of hills, farms, the Trishuli River, and rural villages. Moreover, you also witness the view of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri mountains. If you choose to take a drive, you need to cover a distance of 215 km. During a drive, you can see the green hills, rice paddies, Trishuli river, small villages and mountain views. After 5 to 6 hours, you arrive at Kathmandu. Upon reaching here, you take a rest and can explore the city. You can visit  Kathmandu Durbar Square, Chandragiri Hills, Dakshinkali Temple, and Changu Narayan Temple. At night, you return to your hotel, where you take your last dinner and stay overnight.

Day 18: Final Departure

Day 18 is the last day of your journey. After breakfast, you prepare to return to your home country. Our driver picks you up from your hotel to ensure arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA) at least 3 hours before departure. At the airport, you meet the Ever Nepal team one last time. Here, you can also click some photos, share the memories and moments of the beautiful Himalayan views, and the villages. Then, you take a flight to return.

Notes

Lo- Manthang was founded by Ame Pal Bista in 1380, and it contains features such as a nine-cornered and five-story royal palace that was built in 1400 AD with unique architecture. This town is the home of four major Tibetan Buddhist monasteries: Jampa. They are Jampa (Jampa Lhakhang), Thubchen Gompa, Chodey Gompa, and Choprang Gompa. Among these monasteries, the Jampa Gompa is the oldest one and has also been recognized as a God's house. You can also explore the key sites such as Namgyal Monastery, which is known for its painted interiors depicting Buddha and his disciples. The other key site you can visit is Thingkar Village. This village has a summer palace that has been used by the Lo royal family since 1953.
